Have you forgotten about your Pelvic Floor?

Pelvic Floor

We all want to look after bodies and often perform regular gym sessions and exercises to keep ourselves in good shape. There is one area of the body often forgotten, the pelvic floor! Neglecting this area of the body can lead to:

  • Incontinence, often with laughing, coughing, running
  • Prolapse, often leading to a dragging sensation
  • Urgency, needing to dash to the toilet or voiding more than 8 x a day, or having to get up at night to use the toilet

An increasingly common issue occurring in the modern woman is over-activity of the pelvic floor muscles. Over clenching through our stomachs, pelvic floor and some exercises can lead to a constant tightness within the pelvic floor, which can result in symptoms such as:

  • Frequency, going to the toilet more than 8 x a day due to incomplete emptying due to poor relaxation of the pelvic floor
  • Discomfort with intercourse
  • Incontinence due to being unable to contract the already tight pelvic floor

A women’s health physiotherapist specialises in assessing and diagnosing the exact cause for pelvic floor dysfunction and making a tailor-made exercise programme to suit the individual. We can tell you how strong your pelvic floor is, whether it is weak or tight, and a variety of other modalities that may help you regain normal pelvic floor function.
